FAQ
A psycho-educational assessment is administered to help understand your child’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of their cognitive and academic abilities. In addition, practical recommendations are provided for educational programming. An assessment typically involves intellectual (IQ) and academic testing. As well, questionnaires can be completed by parents and teachers to determine your child’s emotional and behavioural functioning.
Depending on the tests involved and the time it takes determine the cost. Fees are set in accordance with the Psychology Association of Alberta guidelines. A more accurate estimate can be provided when you call to book the assessment. Most insurance providers will cover some psychological services. Call your insurance provider to see your available coverage.
Typically, this will take anywhere between 2 to 4 hours depending on the tests administered. Depending on your child, breaks will often be given throughout to ensure your child remains alert and attentive, and is able to work to his or her best potential.
Any types of assessments done in the past by previous psychologists, medical notes from pediatricians, and assessments administered by speech/language pathologists or occupational therapists can be helpful. As well, past report cards from school can provide valuable information.
Once the assessment is finished a report will be written that explains the test scores and provides recommendations to support your child. This report is yours to share with whomever you would like, such as your child’s teacher or pediatrician.
